TheDarkChristian:

the kindness of strangers

First things first: today's strip sheds a little light on why we haven't seen or heard from Tempest in a while. Of course, if TDC stays on his present course, he's bound to find him soon... I'm also trying out a new layout for the strip itself based on an email I got this week. You'll see many changes over the next week or so. Let me know whether or not you like them.

Had an interesting experience today. On my way to work, a funny sound came from the back of my car, and it suddenly didn't run as smoothly. I rolled my eyes, remembering a similar feeling when I blew my right front tire a few weeks back. After surveying the damage, I determined that I could probably limp along to the next exit.

About 3/4 of the way there, there was a white van pulled off on the side of the highway. I got out of my car and walked up to the van. The guy inside informed me (with broken English and a slight Spanish accent) that he was trying to open his back door. God only knows why, but I was glad he was there. After getting his back door open, I let him know that I had blown my tire and needed a tire iron to operate my jack. He misunderstood me and handed me a jack similar in style to those they use on race cars.

We checked out the damage and determined that the tire hadn't just blown, it had been cut. My wheel well has a rear support for my trunk resting on it, and with a bit of rust, this punched through making an interesting jagged mess of scrap metal out of my wheel well. We got the car up and pulled off the tire, then he went and got a hammer (one thing I never thought I'd need on my car) and we bent the metal out of the way enough that it wouldn't cut the spare unless I hit a large bump.

Extremely grateful, and considering my profession (I'm a server, for those who don't know) I discreetly reached for my wallet. He adamantly refused any form of payment and simply got in his van and drove off. I got off at the next exit and looked the car over, made a few minor adjustments and went on with my day. Without that random guy there, I would never have made it to work, school or home. I'd probably still be on the highway. Thank you, whoever you are. And thank you, Lord, for having him stop there instead of a mile down the road.

~TDC, who is eternally grateful

- pay it forward
