11-22-01 on predestination First of all, let me point you toward our very first subcomic! It's called The Hazing, and it was created by Chrono Catfish, author of RPG World World. Yay! *does happy dance* Speaking of dances, check out Mawgg's break dancing, j0. :D Good stuff. That was the joint idea of me and my sister. Humorous, no? I figured you needed a break after the last strip. Now on to the rant. I have been thinking lately (as the title implies) about predestination. The idea intrigues me for many reasons, not the least of which being its persistence among many popular religions and intelligent people. Of course, we naturally rebel against the idea that our life is predetermined by fate or some supernatural being simply because we like our free will, and we don't want to think that it may be a sham. But can it possibly be? The main problem with the theory is that there's really no way to prove it. One arguing for predestination could say that any seemingly random act which took place would have inevitably happened, and for those precise reasons. It's enough to drive one mad (if you aren't there already ^_~). Arguing the other side, I myself have felt the inevitability of certain actions and the results of said actions. Things happen a certain way for a certain reason, but if I had chosen differently... You see the dilemma? It's an endless game of what-ifs. I can say what if I did this, or what if I did that, but to argue the other side, I didn't do this or I did do that. There can be only one outcome; time will continue to march onward. We can't go back in time (yet) and see how things would have changed if... So we must either accept or reject the idea and wait to see whether it is proven or disproven in the end. Wow. A full page of text, and I didn't say a thing. *chuckle* Good night, folks. ~TDC, who finally saw A Knight's Tale, and enjoyed it |
