freedom!

Once again, I'd like to point out that Life of Wily has added us to their "friends" list! Many thanks!!!

Ah, it's nice to have my rant space back. ^_^ Remmie's rant today counters yesterday's guest rant. If you all like it, we may do something like this once a month or so.

Ah... Life is good. We are beginning to get noticed. :) I like that. Also, now we have a freedom we didn't have before with the strip. Today's strip is more or less a rehashing of an idea that Remmie and I have been playing with for some time.

Tuesday's strip... will be a kick-ass surprise. ;)

I've been making a few designs for T-shirts. If you have a specific design you would like to see on a shirt, let me know. I also made a few new buttons and banners based on the Megaman X theme, updated the disclaimer (thanks Phantom!) and the archives/rants should be all caught up. ^_~

Anyway, since Remmie's going out with his g/f tonight, I guess I'll go see a movie. :D

servant of the Rain

Sometimes I really love my job. And sometimes I really hate it. I mean REALLY. Luckily, tonight was one of those nights that I love what I do. You see, I'm a "Safari Guide" at the Rainforest Cafe. Tonight went fairly smoothly, and I made $112. Really can't complain too much.

But there are some nights that just suck, and you really don't care how much you make: you just want to go home. You see, people are assholes, and it really shows up when they go to tip. People act differently in restaurants than they do anywhere else. There are some people who are extremely understanding (very few) but the majority could really care less who was waiting on them or hardly notice they're there.

Until it's time to tip.

Then they show their true colors. For the most part, tips average 10%. It seem that most people don't know how to tip anymore. So here's a quick lesson.

Tip average should be 15%. It's a standard, people, get with the program. If your server does a good job, give them more. Be generous. If they do a bad job, do NOT, under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, tip less than 10%. The ONLY time a tip of less than 10% is permissible is if the server is an asshole. And I don't mean because they ignore you. I mean the ones who say "fuck you, get the hell out of my restaurant". Yeah, them. Tip them poorly.

Now, I could go into a long dissertation about how most races and age groups tip, but I really don't want to piss people off... not until I gain some notoriety. And I don't want people thinking I'm a racist because of some observation I make here. So I'll just wrap things up by saying this:

Waiters/waitresses work their asses off for their money. Treat them well.

servant of the Rain, revisited

Yesterday (above), I ranted about tips from the perspective of a good night.

Well, tonight I was reminded why I dislike working in restaurants, and why, once I quit here, I will probably never work in a restaurant again.

I closed tonight, which usually means a better section, slightly longer hours and more tables, leading to more money. Good incentive for being the last ones there. Well, today was really slow. I spent the first four hours of my shift running only two tables. To give you an idea, the average section at work is 3-4 tables, and I can handle about 6.

Needless to say, I was bored out of my mind. Until we cut everyone else, that is. Once we were down to the four closers, things got hectic. I was running at about 5% tips until then, and they got a little better. So I started making some money. Yay. My problem is, money doesn't really motivate me, but I need it. I had spent some time at the computer expo before work, and needed to make back some of the money I had spent. ^_^

Well, on Sundays we close at 8. At 8:30, the Kitchen Manager asked me to do a special favor: to pick up one more table. Considering I had had pretty crappy tips that night, I agreed hastily - big mistake. They were great people, I guess, and things went very smoothly. While I was running my ass off, my next-to-last table gave me a $20 cash along with his credit card when he went to pay. I thanked him profusely. ^_~

Anyway, we kept the restaurant open and the grill going, etc. and kept 7 or 8 people 30 minutes longer than they had expected. Then they had the audacity to use a "buy one, get one free" coupon. Assholes. At this point I was beginning to get worried, but since we were doing them a special favor, I figured they'd tip well. *rolls eyes* Why do I always have to learn the hard way?

After the coupon, their bill came to about $47. They paid with a credit card and left quickly (and everyone sighed in relief). I cleaned off the table and picked up the check presenter, then went back to plug in the credit tip. Well, they had originally left me $7 on the card, which would have been a decent tip, but it was scratched out, and they left $0 on the card, and $5 cash.

If you are reading this: fuck you. Don't come into my restaurant again. We don't need people like you in the world.

Also, something I forgot to say yesterday: if your server is having a crappy night, tip them more. Not a whole lot, perhaps, but a little extra will really make their day. And what's a buck or two to you? Nothing much, to make someone smile.

On the other hand, I picked up a 30 Gb 7200rpm hard drive at the expo for $109. ^_^ So I have some work to do. It was difficult not to spend a whole lot more money there. I could've made my entire dream computer for about $600 if I'd had it with me and had the time to sit and think for a bit. So I'll just get a storage boost for now (4.3 Gb just isn't cutting it for me) and do the rest later.

~TDC, who still wishes people knew how to tip.

PS - look for that special strip tomorrow!
